Introduction:

Thirunakkara Arattu is the religious festival of state Kerala which is celebrated annually in commemoration of Lord Shiva.The festival is celebrated in the traditional and cultural manner of the state which makes it unique in its own terms.It is continued for ten days which are the days of festivity and grandeur for the people of the state.

 

Time to celebrate

Thirunakkara Arattu starts from the 1st day of Meenam month of Malyalam calendar and falls in March-April.

Description:

The main venue of the festival is at the Thirunakkara Temple, a lord Shiva temple that is located in the Kottayam district of the state.Bathing ceremony of lord Mahadeva called ‘ARATTU’ and usually nine decorated elephants take part in the Arattu procession that is started from the afternoon.The evenings of the festival days limelighted with folk arts,dances like peacock dance, Velakali etc and the whole temple premises are filled with thousands of followers to become the witness of this spectacle show.Kathakali performances are the prime attractions of the festival.
