Tamil New year is especially celebrated by Tamil speaking people of India on the first day of Chithirai month of Tamil Calendar. It is traditionally known as Varsha Pirappu and is observed as the most auspicious day for any beginning. It is also celebrated in Sri Lanka, Singapore,Malaysia and South Africa.

The most observed activity during the Tamil New Year is the viewing of Kanni which means to view the auspicious things,views only.People believe that performing kanni will bring the good fortune for them throughout the coming year.The day is started with the ritual bath and then continue with lots of happenings and processions.Women started to decorate the houses with Rangolis which is called Kolam in regional language.The whole family offer special pujas by lightening the traditional lamp, Kuthu Vilakku.People go to the temples for seeking blessings of God, religious recitations like Tamil Panchangan observed.The whole atmosphere filled with lots of fervor and rejoices in spirit of making the new year prosper.
