Dev Uthani Ekadashi is a sacred date in Hindu festivals calendar. The Ekadashi date denotes the starting of all auspicious ceremonies which has been ceased before the ekadashi period for 4 months as Lord Vishnu goes into sleep and the succeeding period is banned for prosperous work.

Time to Celebrate:

The Dev Uthani Ekadashi is held on the full moon day of Karthik month ( November- December)

Dev Uthani Ekadashi is a great occasion of festivity thus it is the day when the God wake up after a four-month long slumber. It is believed that Lord Vishnu goes into sleep on the Ashada Shudha Ekadasi (July – August). He remains in deep slumber during the period and this is known as the Chaturmasa period. He wakes up on the Kartik Shukla Ekadasi and this day is observed as Dev Uthani Ekadasi.

During the four-month period Hindu communities avoid performing auspicious ceremonies. Marriages, house warming, construction of new houses are only performed after the four month period. Thus numerous auspicious events like marriage are held afterwards Dev Uthani Ekadasi.
On Dev Uthani Ekadasi day, an image of Lord Vishnu is drawn on the ground. Lamps are lit around it and Fruits and vegetables are offered to this fresh image. People observed fasting also as it is an Ekadasi day.
